Having beautifully colored or streaked hair glams up your looks instantly. However, it could cost a real bomb if you do it at the salon. Another alternative would be to dye your hair at home. Doing it yourself may actually save you the
hair coloring nightmare at the salon. Sometimes, it could be more troublesome and messy but nevertheless it's actually quite easy if you follow these easy steps:
Step 1:First you have to decide what color or streaks you would like to achieve. You can either streak hair for highlights or bleaching them to add a different color the the bleached parts as colored streaks.

Step 2:Visit a beauty supply store for good quality products. Pick up powder bleach and hair color (if you want colored streaks), cream developer, gloves, foils, rat-tail comb and a plastic application bottle.
Step 3:Wear an old shirt or wrap yourself with towels as the bleach will stain your clothes.
Step 4:Unpack all your materials and read the instructions carefully to make sure you understand everything. Line the materials within reach so it's more convenient for you.
Step 5:Mix 1 oz. powder bleach with the 2 1/2 fl. oz. cream developer. If you plan to color hair in addition to bleaching, prepare the dye according to package instructions.
Step 6:Using the rat-tail comb, section out hair and apply bleach mixture to the strands. Once you have covered the entire strip of hair, wrap up with foil and fold. Make sure the foil covers all strands of bleached hair. Do this to each sectioned out strands. Let foiled pieces sit for 25 minutes and rinse with warm water immediately.
Step 7 (Only if you want to achieve colored streaks):If you want to color your streaks, apply hair dye over bleached strands. Separate out the colored pieces by clipping them up and away from untreated hair. Time accordingly and rinse hair thoroughly.
Step 8: Shampoo and condition hair well

Some extra tips:
- Apply bleach or dye to dry, unwashed hair.
- Monitor the progress of the bleaching by checking your foiled pieces every 10 minutes.
- Before streaking your whole head, perform a strand test on a less visible lock of hair.
- Cream developer comes in 10, 20, 30 and 40 level. Lighter hair should use lower level developer while darker hair responds better to level 40.
- Darker hair is harder to lighten and may require repeat applications. Depending on how much lift you achieve upon your first attempt, use a lower level developer on subsequent bleach jobs.
- If hair dye has stained your skin, rub vegetable oil or baby oil over it and color will lift
- Over bleaching can damage hair and cause it to break off. Limit bleaching to once every 4-5 months.
