Skin fast: When it's better to eat your skincare
It's frustrating, but all hope's not lost. Be patient and don't immediately try a different skincare in the hopes of finding your new Holy Grail. Instead, you should go on a 'skin fast'. Your skin is bombarded with too many topical creams and is just overloaded, hence it's going on a strike. Too much of a good thing may not be that good after all. Before you even start to raise your eyebrows and look all puzzled, I'm not asking you to abandon your skincare till your skin gets obedient again. I'm merely asking you to look from the inside instead. Start to nourish your skin from the inside instead of slathering layers of creams. Let your skin take a break from all the creams, sunscreens, potions and serums.
Let me pave your way for your 'skin fast' and say hello to a skin-friendly diet.
You're all too familiar with the saying, 'For beautiful skin, eat lots of fruit and vegetables'. Yeah, yeah we all know that but how should we pack the most punch with the most skin-loving fruits and vegetables?
1) For overall beautiful skin: Choose sweet potatoes, tomatoes and cantaloupe
What do they do? They are packed full of antioxidants and help to ravage those pesky free radicals in our body. Free radicals are major skin enemies that damages skin and is the key contributor of almost all skin problems from dryness right down to wrinkles
2) To fight wrinkles: Choose all citrusy fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit (I'm already feeling the 'sour' feeling in my teeth thinking of these citrusy fruits)
Oranges have the most Vitamin C and you can only eat so much oranges a day without needing to run to the toilet too often. So, try to incorporate some citrus in your diet, such as squeezing lemon or lime juice to your salads, in your water for a fresh taste, make lemonade, and just be creative. They can add alot of zing to your food
What do they do? Citrus fruits are packed with Vitamin C, which is an antioxidant. Before you pooh pooh it as another list of antioxidants, vitamin C helps to keep collagen. Collagen is what keeps your skin smooth and line-free. So, eat more citrus and often to prevent any premature aging to the skin
3) To soothe and smoothen skin: Choose teas such as black, white and green tea.
Green tea is one of the best tea as it has amazingly high amounts of ECGC ( epigallocatechin-3-gallate).
What do they do? ECGC helps to slow down inflammatory chemicals that causes the dreaded acne and sun-related skin aging. Also, good news, it helps to prevent skin cancer. Now, that's what I call you can literally eat your sun screen! Green tea also contains L- theanine which helps to inhibit the stress hormone Cortisol, which erodes our precious collagen. No wonder drinking tea is so calming both to our body and to our skin too
4) To support skin-cell turnover: Choose dark and leafy vegetables like turnip sprouts, spinach and broccoli
What do they do? These dark and leafy greens are packed with skin essential Vitamin A. Vitamin helps to accelerate skin-cell turnover, thus helping to rid off damaged skin to reveal healthy fresh skin. Without Vitamin A, skin turns dry, scaly and rough to the touch
5) For glowing and plump skin: Go fishy and choose omega-3 laden cold water fishes like salmon, trout, tuna, sardines, Atlantic mackerel, Pacific herring, and most shellfish
What do they do? Omega-3s fight inflammation, now considered one of the top skin agers, and they also help protect against sunburn, enhancing the effects of your sunscreen’s SPF. Protein is required to build and repair skin cells and to make enzymes and hormones that help keep it glowing. The omega 3 also helps to plump up skin and keeps it supple and moist
Before you look for a new skincare, why not try to load your skin with these skin-loving food and see and feel the difference. Not only will you have beautiful skin, your body will be healthy and nourished with all these yummy food. Sometimes, natural is just the best approach for your skin
